Kamal Hassan is one of the most versatile film stars Tamil Film World has ever seen. He is an Actor, Singer, Producer, Script Writer and now he has ventured into Direction and is currently directing his own film Marudhanayagam and Hey Ram. He started his career as a child artiste at the age of four. His first film Kalathur Kannamma (1960), won him the President's Gold Medal. He has acted in more than 165 films. During his formative years he was moulded by K.Balachandar. He has acted in a variety of roles ranging from a lunatic to a God Father. Apart from Tamil he has acted in Hindi, Telugu, Malayalam and many other Indian languages. His other language hits include Ek Duje Ke liyae and Sagar in Hindi; Sagara Sangamam and Swathi Muthiyam in Telugu; Chanakyan in Malayalamand many other Indian languages. He is a great experimenter. His film Pesum Padam was a silent movie, Vikram Was a Science fiction, Guna dealt with Paranoic Obsession. In Aboorva Sagothargal he acted as a dwarf, Kurithi Punal had no song sequence. Acted as a lady in Avvai Shanmugi. He worked with a variety of directors like Barathirajaa, Balu Mahendra, Barathan, Singeetham Srinivasa Rao, Mani Ratnam, Shankar among others.He has a good talent for singing, his songs "inji idupazhaga" (Devar Magan), "Kanmani Anbodu Kathalan" (Guna) are all time hits. His films and acting have a degree of Western influence. His film Avvai Shanmugi was influenced by the English Blockbuster "Mrs.Doubtfire". He has won many awards. He has won the National award for the Best Actor thrice- Mundram Pirai (1982), Nayakan (1988), Indian (1996). He has won State level Best Actor many times and from different states-Tamil Nadu State award three times, and AndhraPradesh State award two times. He was conferred the title Padmashri by the Government of India and the Government of Tamil Nadu conferred him the title Kalaimamani His latest film was Hey Ram.
